Sun and Moon Duoloquy

From:

GENESIS OF THE MARBLE

ACT I

Scene 2

                    SETTING:              The COSMOS.

AT RISE:              THE GREAT GOD SUN stands atop a per-

                                          son-sized floating sphere. He is

dressed in bright colors and cradles

silky strands of warmth in his cupped

palms. Below, THE EVIL GODDESS MOON

stands inverted on the bottom of the                                            sphere, flush with pale radiance. She

clutches a smaller orb in her hands

                                          and strokes it.

SUN

I speak in whispr’d hush, may not my sister hear

The gloried task in mind, creation of my kin

To cherish and to bless, upon this very sphere

The Marble be it called, and Sunborn there within.

(SUN pours a strand of warmth from

his hands. It seeps into the sphere                                             and an illumination is seen within.

                                        Around SUN’s feet, small silhouetted

                            figures begin to arise.)

(MOON stretches to glance up at her

brother and his CREATIONS. A malev-                                              olent smile creases her face.)

MOON

Through senses keen and sharp, my brother's task I heed

So he creates his kin, my Moonborn rise as well

To torture and to hone, prepare them for my need

Invade his Marble fair, his Sunborn slain and fell.

(MOON sinks her talons into the orb

in her hands. They pierce the orb

and a darkness spreads like smoke

within. Around the perimeter of the

                                          orb, twisted figures form.)

(A shudder goes through the Marble.

SUN frowns but cannot see his sis-                                              ter’s machinations.)

SUN

My sister does not Dream, and thus she plots my fall

Not interfere shall she, at least without my say

I Gift some few the Dream, my treasure above all

The rest a different Gift, to keep foul Moon at bay.

(SUN casts out the other strands of

light, which curl in the cosmos to

form a cloud. This is Draumir, and

                                          several of the silhouetted figures

begin to arise on it. SUN spreads

his arms over both the Marble and

                                          Draumir. The silhouetted figures

begin to resolve into OPERANS, TIX-                                              ANS, and KUDRANS. All three races

are represented on the Marble, but

only OPERANS are seen on Draumir.)

MOON

My brother has the Dream, the selfish Gift unshared

He thinks to keep me out - protection does he lend

I Gift my Moonborns Heal, that they shall be prepared

And speak I to each race, corrupt them to my end.

(MOON casts her dark orb into the

air and it hovers, spinning slowly.                                            The silhouettes begin to resolve

into MOONBORN, each imbued with a                                              dark light - the Gift of Regener-

                                          ation.)

(SUN and MOON begin to walk around                                              the Marble, each moving in perfectly                                            matched steps to the other. SUN                                                  touches the Marble at different                                                  places as he passes, causing differ-                                            ent folk to arise. MOON then touches                                            the same places as she passes, and                                              darkness begins to take root.)

SUN

The Operans preferred, the ones who Dream with me

I give the Gift of Word, loquacious shall they be.

MOON

You Operans are slaves, the Dream your wretched chain

But one of you must crave, your freedom from the pain?

(A darkness blossoms among the OPER-

ANS, but quickly fades back into

light. SUN smiles and MOON grimaces                                              as they continue to orbit the Marble.)

SUN

The Tixans like to kit, for small and swift they are

I give the Gift of Wit, their cunning brings them far.

MOON

You Tixans suffer here, in forests harsh and cold

Allow me interfere, a new land will I mold.

(As before, the darkness spreads a

small amount amongst the TIXANS, but

                                          eventually fades back into light.

Again, SUN smiles and MOON grimaces

as they continue to orbit the Marble.)

SUN

The Kudrans stand at length, though intellect be gone

I give the Gift of Strength, that they may soldier on.

MOON

You Kudrans on the seas, are battered by the storm

Permit the change I please, a home for you I’ll form.

(This time, the darkness continues to

                                          spread through the KUDRAN population.

MOON stretches her hand down, and one

of the silhouetted KUDRANS takes it.

MOON’s eyes burst alight and her grin

                                          widens.)

SUN and MOON

(together, overlapping)

These Sunborn peoples three, their spirits hold the key

The Marble only strong, if they shall do no wrong

And cursed deals not make, lest enemy then take

Corruption soon will spread, an era marked with dread.
